About the Author

Phil Davis received a Master of Divinity degree from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, Deerfield, Ill., pastored at three different churches in Florida, and wrote his first book The Father I Never Knew (1991, NavPress) during that time. Having a conversion experience as an Airman in the U.S. Air Force, he spent 24 years in the Evangelical movement before deciding to leave. Phil has three grown children and eight grandchildren; he is a co-owner of a multimedia company.

About the Book

After 24 years in the Evangelical movement, nine as a dedicated layman, three as a seminarian, and twelve as an ordained pastor, Phil Davis decided to leave his “first faith.” This was not a decision taken lightly. That was 30 years ago.

The author takes us on his journey to de-program himself and open himself to the God beyond any one religion. Feeling “sick” from the whole institutional and scholastic church approach, tired of the manipulative “voice” of God drummed into his head, and trusting that the real God is somewhere beyond his “adopted” theology, the author proceeds to deconstruct and reconstruct his view of the Divine Presence.

How much of our faith is based upon a set of church “doctrines” that we are told to believe?
Is God just a theological construct?
Surely a truly divine Superior Being must be above and beyond all man’s multitude of theological and religious beliefs.
Is it possible that our religion can be a major obstacle to discovering the truth about the Divine Presence?
The author winds up taking a wrecking ball to his old theological house of cards.
